Building a name in sustainability and governance

EDC’s various environmental and social programs are designed to meet the existing and pressing needs of the community in ways that would empower its members to improve and secure their future. These programs focus on improving their health, education, livelihood and environmental conditions and are implemented by a dedicated team of experts in the fields of applied and natural sciences as well as in community organizing and people empowerment.

Building a name in sustainability and governance

Over the course of its significant operational history, EDC has built its reputation as a champion of environmental management, social responsibility and good corporate governance – reflecting the company’s recognition that sustainable long-term geothermal development is tied into both the environment and welfare of the company’s host communities.

Beyond compliance with government regulations and standards, EDC’s 37 years of reputable green record has succeeded in setting the pace in corporate environmentalism with some of its practices becoming the benchmark of environmental standards in the global geothermal industry.

EDC has forged community partnerships through its HELEn (Health, Education, Livelihood Environment)program – the company’s umbrella program for all its corporate social responsibility projects that promote the health and well-being of host communities, provide quality basic and alternative education, teach livelihood and involve communities in protecting and preserving the environment.

Under this umbrella program, EDC implements BINHI, its centerpiece reforestation project,
that focuses on the replanting of premium endangered Philippine tree species, restoration
of biodiversity, and establishment of tree farms and livelihood for host communities.

EDC’s Leyte Schools for Excellence (SFE) project, on the other hand, is an innovation to the Adopt-A-School program of the Department of Education which aims to provide quality basic education in the upland villages of Tongonan in Ormoc and Kananga.

As part of the HELEn program, the company also helped established the Kananga-EDC Institute of Technology (KEITECH) – a technical-vocational school project jointly implemented by EDC, the LGU of Kananga and TESDA in Kananga, Leyte. KEITECH has been a consistent performer in National Certification Assessments and has produced more than 500 trainees sourced from host communities. With an average 95% employment rate for all its graduates, KEITECH has been providing world-class manpower to industries, both in the country and abroad.

EDC’s various environmental and social programs are designed to meet existing and pressing   needs of the community in ways that would empower them to improve and secure their future.   These programs focus on improving their health, education, livelihood and environmental   conditions and are implemented by a dedicated team of nearly 80 multi-disciplinary   professionals with expertise and experience in the fields of applied and natural sciences as   well as in community organizing and people empowerment.

EDC’s efforts in water sustainability were selected among the country’s 10 best practices and   showcased at the Philippine Pavilion of the 2008 World Expo, serving to highlight the   expertise of EDC in the science of both geothermal energy and the environment.

In September 2011, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) bestowed on EDC the highly   prestigious Client Leadership Award for its excellent sustainability record, topping 129   companies and organizations across 70 countries.

Locally, EDC has attained the Platinum scorecard rating for corporate governance from the   Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) after three consecutive years of achieving the gold rating. The confidence these institutions have with EDC comes not only from meeting their stringent requirements, but also in EDC’s proactive approach to manage the balance between profit, planet, and people, and to promote further transparency.
